Discovered in 1842 by Carl Mosander, Sweden.
Used in heat-absorbing glass and photographic filters. Colors glass and porcelain pink and is often used to coat sunglasses. Used in the nuclear industry, as well as in alloys, especially with vanadium and titanium.

Obtained from bastnasite and monazite, mined in the USA, China, Russia, Australia, and India.
