Element of the day (day 40)
#32) Ge-Germanium -] metal
Beneficial to full health, or thought to be for plants and animals.
Discovered in 1886 by Clemens Winkler, Germany.
A brittle and stable element, unaffected by air or water, acids or alkalis. Germanium has semiconductor properties, and its greatest use is in transistors. Was the first element used to construct semiconductors and trasnistors. Also in metal alloys, in flourescent lamps and as a chemical catalyst.
Rarely found in minerals except in trace amounts. Produced in nations that produce copper and zinc. Argyrodite and germanite are rare germanium-bearing minerals.
