Kenny and swimming~~~}Seeing chlorine is the element of the day got me thinking about pools. It is 108 degrees outside- luckily for me I'm too sick to go out. However if Kenny was around I know he would be ready to jump in a pool; anywhere he could. Kenny loved to swim.He would drive to his Grandpa Ken's to go swimming. He would even make special trips to swim with his much younger cousin because she would ask him to.She would have a lot of fun swimming with Kenny because he was so accommodating to push her in the floating rings and do cannonballs with her. Earlier this summer, on another very hot day she was trying to get someone else to go swimming with her, but he wouldn't and she said "I miss Kenny" which was really sad and sweet because she is only six years old. I think that's the same age Kenny was when his grandparents bought the house with the pool. But Kenny was swimming long before that~he was always a little fish and would stay in the water for hours. He took the longest showers in the family-over an hour at times, and some days he'd take two or three showers. I think it was a way for him to escape the hardships of life.
I remember so many times Kenny would ask me to go swimming with him and I didn't go. I was thinking about that recently when I was at his grandparents. Kenny didn't ask for much and I feel terrible that I didn't grant that one request. The last time we swam together was 4th of July in 2011. That was a great day. It was the last 4th of July we were together. All of us went to his Grandpa Ken's (it was also Ken's last 4th of July) There was a lot of family there; we had a b.b.q. and swam most of the day-then did fireworks for over an hour in the dark. It was a very good day, and my last memory of swimming with my son.
I haven't swam at all since then. In fact, I couldn't look at the pool for months. Kenny's dad recently had the pool refinished and its as beautiful and sparkling as a new pool. I'm sure Kenny would have been the first to jump in on the day it was finished if he were here. He would swim anytime he could and try to get anyone to go with him. He would ask his friends to go--he had friends with access to pools; if that didn't work and he didn't feel like driving he would walk over to his aunt's to swim. She lives fairly close but most often it was so hot that he would dry off completely while walking home, then he'd want to shower to cool off-I thought that was amusing...
Element of the day-] (day 9)
#17) Cl-Chlorine (gas): Critical for life processes for plants and animals
Discovered in 1774 by Karl Scheele, Sweden.
A corrosive, yellowish-greenish gas. Used in many applications, such as in bleaches and as a sterilizing agent for water supplies. Essential in the production of solvents, paper products, dyes, textiles, medicines, insecticides, solvents, paints, refrigerants and plastics. Used to make hydrochloric acid, an important chemical.
Obtained by electrolysis of sodium chloride solutions. Most common mineral is halite (sodium chloride), mined in the USA, China, Germany, Russia and Canada.
